you know, in hindsight, doki doki literature club was VERY underwhelming.

i sort of get why it was popular? i think most people will always find the sort of bait and switch it pulls at least somewhat novel, and i do think that the horror elements were, if nothing else, interesting. it's not a bad game by any means, but i think that if it weren't for the horror elements, it would be.

the main visual novel stuff before it gets all weird and fucked up is just not enjoyable. it's so cutesy and saccharine that it hurts, the dialogue is pandering to an uncomfortable degree, the characters are somehow both annoying and yet also boring, and that's all you get for the majority of the game. if i didn't know that the game was more than just that going in (or if the game was any longer than it was), there's no chance in hell i would've finished it.

which like, okay. i get that this is on some level the point. it's supposed to be a parody of the dating sim/visual novel style. but like, it's a poe's law situation. if it weren't for the horror elements, you wouldn't be able to tell that it's supposed to be a parody/satire. and honestly, i think this makes the horror elements less effective. my thoughts when i got to the first scary scene weren't "holy shit what is going on," they were "oh finally something interesting has happened". which, in my opinion, is a failure on the game's part!!!

i'm still glad i played it for the sake of understanding its place in gaming culture, and i have found great joy in watching youtubers play it when they had no idea what they were getting into. but for me, it failed as a visual novel, and as a psychological horror game, i felt far more scared by other indie games doing similar things.

Sayonika is just so....hngnhgghnfhn... I have written essays on the matter. I have also written fanfiction on the matter. They just fit together so snugly as people. Like, they're very similar in a lot of ways, share a lot of the same problems and therefore have very good perspective and answers to give each other on terms of solving them. They're the epitome of "it's easy to solve other people's problems, hard to solve my own". They make my brain mush.

I used to be a really big fan of MC x Sayori, mostly because I only thought in the context of the original game and really wanted Sayori to be happy, but it doesn't compel me as much as it used to. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely a lot of fun to be had; lots of room for angst and playing with their dynamic, particularly in playing with the meta of DDLC, but the really interesting parts require taking some creative liberties with MC's character, since he's purposely designed to be flat. I might spend some time mucking about with some concepts there (particularly with EggMC, hehehe) but I don't really have a super solid vision for it.

Poly Dokis is the logical conclusion to a lot of my shipping thoughts related to DDLC. Every single one of the girls has their own dynamics which provide all sorts of interesting outcomes to look at, and I think it's pretty clear that they all have quite a bit of love for one another. I'm not one for strictly defining a single canon universe to write everything out of (Reality can be whatever I want) but if I had to choose one, Poly Dokis is what I'd go for. This way, nobody's left out! There's definitely room for MC there too.

I think in general (woag formatting change) a lot of people just lack a concept for poly relationships, which is why it's sorta tough for them to envision, but I think it's unlikely that it'd be an issue for the girls at all, realistically. It's just a matter of them saying "wait, we don't have to be monogamous?" After all, they all wuv each other vewy much.

...I don't know what came over me there; my point is that it's very fitting, and there's a lot of potential. I think even if it's not a strictly romantic relationship, it's very likely that all 4 of them would remain very close, with MC as something of a tag-along.

Since COVID! Probably late 2019/ early 2020, I watched their TNTL content a lot. I was in a pretty bad place mentally and Smosh brought me a lot of happiness during those times. I was aware of Smosh back in the early days of YouTube, but early Smosh wasn't what I was into when I was younger.

It's a close one between Amanda and Angela (which is unsurprising based on the content of my blog). Angela probably wins very marginally between the two of them because 1. I relate to her so much 2. I have incredible gender envy of her 3. She's in Starkid!! I love their musicals so much

This TNTL specifically the Kingdom Hearts bit done by Damien and Shayne got me into watching Smosh more regularly. I'm a huge Kingdom Hearts fan. Damien and Jackie were my favourites when I first started watching!

I just think it would be sooo funny because Shayne and the guest could explain how batshit crazy some anime plotlines are, and she'd probably go, "Wait, now I need to watch it?"

*raises hand* This is a tangent that's vaguely related to this, but how many games are there of "thing children enjoy but creepypasta" now? Hell, as a kid I could find a video, full gore and everything, of Cupcakes on YouTube. (I was horrified by this because I saw it tossed around with no warning, and then looked it up, and stopped watching it. I was maybe 13ish. Also I am an avid advocate for saying WHY something belongs in a certain category as opposed to the trend of trying to make content creators hide this kind of content in untagged spaces to prevent, y'know, demonetization over being impure only to traumatize children watching it without any kind of filters)

There's games where you have to not only escape Pinkie Pie and save the others, games where you try to escape Sonic.EXE only to fail and die horribly, there's a version of that with Sally.EXE and one with fucking Rainbow Dash.EXE which are all... what the actual fuck. If it were tagged "horror", "gore", "characters you love are now monsters" shit like that, and possibly suicide warnings for some of the games above as well (I'm not a fan of Doki Doki Literature Club but Dan Salvado DID put a warning before playing so that's on me for trying to play it so he gets a pass)(and relating back to the above everyone wants to be FNAF, BATIM, or DDLC but try to market it to kids which... yikes) then there would be way fewer people waking up at 4 AM with nightmares (myself included).

Also on the topic of "games that REALLY should have warnings" and "games that kids played for some reason", why was there an obsession with fucking Corpse Party of all things? Like, the first 10 minutes into the game you wind up not only seeing one girl hanging herself, but if you fuck it up, there's two girls hanging at the first "you failed, bad end # whatever" and the artwork for that is immensely disturbing. There's also ghosts of kids missing their tongues or half of their fucking heads, and YOU SEE THE GRISLY BOTCHED DECAPITATION IN THE GHOSTLY FORM.

And then we have fucking Slenderman. It's basically a game based on either Dead by Daylight or the mock DBD game from the series Reboot (in which you collect a certain number of pages from a book and then put them in the book in order to end the game) where you're hunted by Slenderman while you try to collect all 8 pages. I don't know why this was popular in 2012-2013, nor do I know why suddenly afterwards there were a LOT of "creepypasta" characters that were either glorified serial killers with no rhyme or reason to victims or uwu-beaned versions of those characters that are 90% able to be traced back to Roblox specifically, but the fact that THIS exists

I took this photo in the leadup to Halloween. I don't even know what the younger generation is chasing for horror games now but I feel like Poppy Playtime is trying to cash in on the horror game for kids thing way too hard, and causing a lot of problems.

Also yes, you can find cheaply made FNAF costumes that are glorified "murdered kids" vibe costumes as opposed to straight up the cool shit with glowing eyes and everything that cosplayers make. And FNAF party stuff, BUT I see one reason to do this that would be interesting: market that towards the young adults/teens who see FNAF cosplay and want to do a themed birthday like being a kid but have it feel more "adult" by it being based around kids being fucking killed. Or rather, so adults can do Pizzeria Simulator IRL for fun. Or an inside joke for new parents that the kids don't get yet.
